A Closer Look: Episode 14 - Caravaggio’s “Sacrifice of Isaac”

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, the artist simply known now as Caravaggio, is someone whose work polarises. While some viewers respond to the gritty 'realness' of the artist's approach to the religious scenes he paints, others find his theatricality overwhelming or somewhat staged.

Regardless, modern viewers know him as a painter whose life was as turbulent as some of his canvases, and thanks to the archive we're able to reconstruct his biography in fine detail.

In this episode of A Closer Look, Nick Gordon and Kathleen Olive go beyond the truisms to investigate what makes a work like Caravaggio's "Sacrifice of Isaac" a true masterpiece.
