Getting local in Japan: The Aomori Nebuta Festival

Limelight Arts Travel staff

In Aomori, summer sees one of Japan's most popular festivals unfold. Giant painted paper lanterns are pulled through the streets of the northern town, accompanied by singing and dancing. The Festival has been happening for more than a century, and its joyful celebration of summer bounty, artisanal craft, and community spirit mean that it rates high on the bucket list of Japanese.

In this episode of our podcast Talking Travel, Limelight Arts Travel's Mark Lalor speaks with Gwen Baines, of the Aomori Prefectural Government, about the many meanings of the Nebuta Festival - and of what you can expect when you attend.
